What's a bunion? If you’re like many people (especially if you are a Greek foot type, when your second toe is longer than the first), your big toe may lean slightly toward your other toes. Over time, the base of the big toe pushes outward against the first metatarsal bone, which is directly behind it.The result is a bunion - a bony, often painful hump at the base of the big toe. Bunions form at a joint. That’s where the toe bends normally when you walk or dance on demi-pointe. But when you have a bunion, all of your body weight rests on it each time you take a step. It can hurt even when you w...

The "plastic" Grishkos: pros and cons

Penny was one of my first customers. Back then, when she was 10 years old and a pointe beginner. Now she is 17, the boast of her dance school - because of her passion and hard work, not because of her physique. Penny’s arches aren’t flexible at all, thus we had to restrictively stick to Grishko Pro-Flex model. However, each time she comes for her next pair, we go through all the new models, so the last time she tried the Dream Pointe 2007.  She was thrilled of how her arch looked in the mirror, so did her teacher. Yesterday, though, she came back for her old and faithful Pro-Flexes:-          ...

With a welcoming mood to our newest entry, a gorgeous collection of a russian ballet dancewear Zefir brand, we have made a little research in order to find out which ballet skirt will be your must wear. A ballet skirt definitely adds instant beauty to your style. Ranging from maxi skirts to minis, wrap skirts and pullover skirts and you're faced with a lot of choices. Some skirt styles look better on you than others, and vice versa.   If your body type is:APPLE(HEART) Your lower body is slim and you carry weight around your middle (or else you have ample bust). My student commented yesterday, "how is it you can wear your pointe shoes without elastic and they don't fall off?" I told them because they are the perfect fit! This is what happens when someone you work with is an expert at their job!She is a breathtaking dancer, a teacher and also ... a mother of FOUR. Dana sent us her measurements and footprints to see if there was a better shoe for her than the 2007 that she was using. Long toes, narrow feet, slightly compressible, great arch that could use a nice v-vamp. We suggested her to try a Vaganova model, (3,5 XX) and she told us that she used to ...

When you have toes like this... I was wondering if you could make any model recommendations for me. I wear an 8.5/9 and have narrow feet and long toes. I really struggle with finding brands with a long enough box.Kate   If your toes are this long, I think you suffer even when you are trying to buy street shoes. This is because street shoes are designed and manufactured assuming an average toe length. In the picture, both feet are the same length, but the ball of the foot hits a very different place in a shoe. With pointe shoes, it is even more important to find place for all these toes in the ...

Have you ever experienced any different feeling while switching from your old pair of pointe shoes to your new one - while the model and the size are exactly the same? Or - if you are going through numerous pairs of pointe shoes - have you ever had a pair that was more comfortable than all the others?  If yes, here is the explanation. The 100% handmade pointe shoes, like Grishkos, Russian pointe etc - are made by human beings... more particularly, by highly skilled pointe shoe makers. I think, it has to be one of the most rare professional occupations... Each one's job is unique and as a resu...
